LOS ANGELES, D.C., May 10 (UPI) -- Paramount's 'Star Trek' reboot hit warp speed in its opening weekend at the U.S. box office, taking in $76.5 million, Daily Variety said Sunday.
The figure includes $4 million from Thursday night plays. In addition, director J.J. Abrams' contemporary take on the venerable TV and feature film franchise grossed $35.5 million in 54 overseas markets, Variety said.
The domestic gross is the second biggest of 2009, trailing only "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which took in $85 million when it opened last weekend. "Wolverine" was No. 2 this week with an estimated $27 million -- a decline of 67 percent from last weekend.
The Matthew McConaughey-Jennifer Garner romantic comedy "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" was No. 3 with $10.5 million, followed by "Obsessed" ($6.6 million) at No. 4 and "17 Again" ($4.4 million) at No. 5.
"Next Day Air" -- the only other new wide release this weekend beside "Star Trek" -- took in $4 million to open at No. 6.
"The Soloist" ($3.6 million); "Monsters vs. Aliens" ($3.4 million); "Earth" ($2.5 million); and "Hannah Montana The Movie" ($2.4 million) rounded out the top 10.
