Mia Farrow ends hunger strike for Darfur

NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- U.S. actress and activist Mia Farrow says that on the advice of her doctors she has ended her hunger strike for Darfur after 12 days.

Farrow, 64, has adhered to a liquid diet since April 27 in an effort to bring attention to those suffering in the war-torn region of Darfur. She ended her fast Friday, Usmagazine reported.

"I have been instructed by my doctor to stop my fast immediately due to health concerns -- including possible seizures," she told TV's "Entertainment Tonight" program. "I am fortunate. The women, children, and men I am fasting for do not have this option. ... When I began this fast 12 days ago, I hoped another would take my place, and another, and another, until the expelled humanitarian agencies are readmitted and finally there can be justice and peace for the people of Darfur. Richard Branson has stepped forward and so I have ended this fast."

Farrow, whose film credits include "Rosemary's Baby," "Hannah and Her Sisters" and "Be Kind, Rewind," had chronicled her hunger strike experience in videos posted on YouTube.
