
NEW YORK, May 5 (UPI) -- The stage adaptation of the feel-good movie "Billy Elliot" was nominated for 15 Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical, in New York Tuesday.
The show about a young boy who loves to dance is tied with "The Producers" for the most Tony nominations ever.
"Billy Elliot" is also up for Broadway's top prizes in the following musical categories: Best Direction, Best Orchestrations, Best Lighting, Best Sound Design, Best Costume Design, Best Scenic Design, Choreography, Best Original Score and Best Book.
In addition, the musical earned a joint nod for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, and Kiril Kulish, as well as separate nominations for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for David Bologna and Gregory Jbara, and Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for Haydn Gwynne and Carole Shelley.
Also in the running for Best Musical are "Next to Normal," "Rock of Ages" and "Shrek The Musical."
Nominated for Best Revival of a Musical are "Guys and Dolls," "Hair," "Pal Joey" and "West Side Story."
Shortlisted for the Tony for Best Special Theatrical Event are "Liza's at The Palace," "Slava's Snowshow," "Soul of Shaolin" and "You're Welcome America. A Final Night with George W. Bush."
