Writer: 'Cover' to highlight Memphis music

MEMPHIS, April 26 (UPI) -- The music scene of Memphis will be the focus of the new MTV project, "$5 Cover," which will also be broadcast online, its creator says.

Writer-director Craig Brewer said the project will feature 15 so-called webisodes that are each focused on a specific music performance in the Tennessee city's music scene, the Memphis Commercial Appeal said Sunday.

Brewer, 37, said the five to seven-minute installments, set to air online and on television starting Friday, should offer non-Memphis residents an insight into the city's famed music world.

"This is a new way for everybody outside of Memphis to learn about Memphis artists, without those artists having to compromise who they are," he told the Commercial Appeal.

Brewer appeared particularly proud that the new media production is being made entirely in Memphis.

"I think we're coming to a time when I don't think we can bank on a lot of feature film-making on a major-studio level coming to Tennessee. But we could possibly lead in new media," he said. "It's something that our crew base could handle."
