10 new musicals up for Drama League Award

NEW YORK, April 21 (UPI) -- The Drama League said Tuesday that 10 New York shows are competing for its distinguished production of a musical prize.

In the running are "9 to 5: The Musical," "Billy Elliot: The Musical," "Fela!," "Liza's at the Palace," "The Marvelous Wonderettes," "Road Show," "Rock of Ages," "Shrek The Musical," "The Toxic Avenger" and "This Beautiful City."

Nominated in the play category are "33 Variations," "Black Watch," "Chair," "God of Carnage," "If You See Something, Say Something," "Lady," "reasons to be pretty," "Ruined," "Shipwrecked!," "Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them" and "Wig Out!"

The short list for the award for distinguished revival of a musical includes "Enter Laughing," "Garden of Earthly Delights," "Guys and Dolls," "Hair," "Pal Joey" and "West Side Story."

The contenders for the revival of a play honor are "Blithe Spirit," "The Cripple of Inishmaan," "Desire Under the Elms," "Mabou Mines Dollhouse," "Exit the King," "Joe Turner's Come and Gone," "Mary Stuart,"

"The Norman Conquests," "Our Town," "The Seagull," "Speed-the-Plow" and "Uncle Vanya."

The 75th annual Drama League Awards ceremony and luncheon is slated to take place May 15 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Manhattan's Times Square.
