PHILADELPHIA, April 19 (UPI) -- The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia is in limbo after Pennsylvania officials reneged on promised capital funding, an official says.
Museum President Sharon A. Smith said the museum had expected to move into the Independence National Historical Park. But, he said, Gov. Ed Rendell hasn't come through with promised funding and the museum has lost its deal for a spot in the historical park, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Sunday.
The museum, a fixture in the city for 88 years, has already sold its previous location and its thousands of Civil War artifacts are in storage.
"We are back in a place where there's a big question mark whether a big part of Philadelphia's heritage is going to remain here," Smith said. "That's an unpleasant place to be."
National Park Service officials said they were forced to move on when the museum couldn't come up with the money it needs to relocate
A spokesman for Rendell said the money isn't available because of other priorities and urged the museum to seek legislative help, the Inquirer said.
