Mel Gibson's wife files for divorce

LOS ANGELES, April 13 (UPI) -- Robyn Moore, who has been married to U.S. actor Mel Gibson for more than 28 years, has filed for divorce, People.com said Monday.

The news follows media reports that the film star and Oscar-winning director has been seeing another woman.

People magazine said on its Web site Monday that court papers show Moore blamed irreconcilable differences for the split. The former dental nurse is seeking joint physical and legal custody of their only child who is still a minor, 9-year-old Thomas, and is asking for spousal support.

"Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so," the couple, who have seven children together, said in a joint statement issued Monday.

TMZ cited unnamed sources as saying the couple had no prenuptial agreement.

Although the divorce papers Moore filed Monday said the date of her separation from Gibson is to be determined, TMZ quoted sources as saying the couple have been estranged for more than 2 1/2 years.

The Web site noted the timing of the separation is important in determining the division of assets.

Gibson's film credits include the unlikely blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ," as well as "Braveheart" and the "Lethal Weapon" movies.
