LOS ANGELES, April 7 (UPI) -- A remake of the Kathleen Turner-Michael Douglas big-screen adventure "Romancing the Stone" is in the works, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The film is one of many 1980s-era makeovers currently in development, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.

Also up for re-dos or follow-ups are "Footloose," "A Nightmare on Elm Street," "Dune," "The Karate Kid," "Red Dawn," "RoboCop," "The Big Chill," "Arthur," "Ghostbusters" and "The NeverEnding Story."

"If you're trying to get a movie made now, you can push the rock up a mountain or you can push it on flat ground," a studio-based producer told the Reporter, explaining how the recent spate of planned remakes is, in part, due to the fact that familiar properties are easier to sell. "And most of us would rather push it on flat ground."
