NEW YORK, March 30 (UPI) -- A decision regarding whether to cancel "Guiding Light," the longest-running U.S. soap opera, is expected to be made within the next month, insiders say.

TV Week said CBS' current deal for the Procter & Gamble-produced series is set to end in September after a run of more than 70 years on radio and television for the venerable series. The network is said to be considering dropping it due to low ratings.

The decision is expected to be made soon, so if the daytime drama does get the ax, writers will have a chance to tie up loose ends and CBS will have time to find replacement programming, possibly a game show or talk show, TV Week said.

Representatives for CBS and P&G declined to comment on the story, the publication said.
