'Monsters,' 'Haunting' open 1-2

"Monsters vs. Aliens" premiere held in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, March 29 (UPI) -- Kid-friendly "Monsters Vs. Aliens" and teen-thrilling "The Haunting in Connecticut" opened 1-2 in U.S. movie theaters this weekend, Box Office Mojo said Sunday.

"Monsters" took the top spot with an impressive $58.2 million in its first weekend. The animated movie's credit list of celebrity voices includes Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland, Amy Poehler and Renee Zellweger.

"Haunting" opened at No. 2 with an estimated $23.01 million in ticket sales. The horror show stars Virginia Madsen and Kyle Gallner.

"Knowing" fell from No. 1 to No. 3 with $14.71 million in estimated gate receipts, followed by "I Love You, Man" with $12.6 million, "Duplicity" with $7.57 million and "Race to Witch Mountain" with $5.64 million.

Another now movie, "12 Rounds," a police action movie starring John Cena and Ashley Scott, was No. 7 in its first weekend, taking in $5.3 million.

The rest of the top 10 were "Watchmen" at $2.76 million, "Taken" at $2.7 million and "The Last House on the Left" at $2.61 million.

Gone are "Slumdog Millionaire," the Oscar-winning movie that grossed an estimated $139.31 million and spent 19 weeks in the top 10; "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail" and "Coraline."
