Madonna adoption attempt being blocked

LILONGWE, Malawi, March 28 (UPI) -- A 61-year-old woman in Malawi says she will try to block any attempt by U.S. pop star Madonna to adopt her 4-year-old granddaughter.

Lucy Chekechiwa has questioned the "Material Girl" star's attempts to become the legal parent to Chekechiwa's granddaughter, Mercy James, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

"Why doesn't this singer pick other children? It is stealing," Chekechiwa said of Madonna, whose full name is Madonna Ciccone. "I want to go to court. I won't let her go."

Ciccone, 50, has already adopted one Malawi child, 3-year-old David Banda, and has two children of her own.

James's mother died at the age of 18 after giving birth to the girl, while the young Malawi native's father has died of AIDS, the British newspaper said

Chekechiwa told the Telegraph she has an agreement in place with the orphanage holding her granddaughter that means she will gain custody of James when the child turns 6.
