MONTEREY, Calif., March 26 (UPI) -- Singer Joan Baez's former home in Carmel Valley, Calif., is to be included on Monterey County's Register of Historic Resources, officials said.
The designation will make it worthwhile for the current owners to remodel the home using the style and construction techniques used nearly half a century ago when the house was built, rather than raze it and construct a new one, The Monterey County (Calif.) Herald said.
Baez owned the house from 1964-68, a period in her career when she was a well-known leader in civil rights, anti-war and folk music movements.
"I was a fan, absolutely. I was back in school in the '60s and listened to Joan Baez," said Roger Blattberg, who bought the house and 5-acre piece of property about two years ago for $1.8 million.
Blattberg also told the newspaper Baez has been known to visit her former dwelling over the years.
"There is a legacy there," he said to the Herald. "A lot of old-time residents talk about what happened at the house."
