LOS ANGELES, March 5 (UPI) -- Singer Chris Brown was charged in a Los Angeles court Thursday with felony counts of assault and making criminal threats, CNN reported.

The 19-year-old recording artist was arrested for allegedly beating up his 21-year-old girlfriend, singer Rihanna, during a heated argument last month in which Brown allegedly tried to force his girlfriend out of a car, pushed her head against the vehicle's passenger window, punched her in the eye, arms and face, and bit her ear and fingers.

CNN said Brown also is accused of telling his alleged victim, "I'm going to beat the (expletive) out of you when we get home! You wait and see!" When she pretended to call her assistant and instruct her to have police at her house when she arrived home, Brown allegedly stated: "You just did the stupidest thing ever! Now I'm really going to kill you!"

Brown issued a public apology for his conduct shortly after the incident and the couple reportedly have since reconciled.

CNN quoted a sworn police statement as saying the altercation allegedly occurred after Brown's girlfriend discovered a text message on his cell phone from "a woman who Brown had a previous sexual relationship with."

E! News said a judge postponed until April 6 Brown's arraignment, which was scheduled for this week, at the request of Brown's lawyer.
