Kimmel teases Gibson about DUI

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. talk show host Jimmy Kimmel teased Mel Gibson about his 2006 drunken driving arrest, during which he made anti-Semitic remarks to a Jewish officer.

Although the actor-director has publicly apologized for the incident, Gibson earned a lot of negative press and has maintained a relatively low profile since it happened.

"Let me say, Shalom," Kimmel said as he welcomed the two-time Academy Award winner to his post-Oscar TV special early Monday.

"Shalom to you," Gibson gamely replied.

Talking to Gibson about his reputation as a practical joker, Kimmel quipped: "What about that practical joke you pulled on the Malibu police where you acted drunk and said crazy things? They fell for that hook, line and sinker."

Gibson laughed and remarked: "Yeah, that was a pretty good performance. One that's hard to forget."

Noting Gibson still lives in the same area, Kimmel asked if things are OK now with the local law enforcement.

"Everything's cool," Gibson said. "Yeah, I sat down and had a cup of coffee with the guy and said: "Sorry. Thanks for getting me off the road. I was a (expletive.)"
