NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- The majority of the more than 300 people arrested in New Orleans during recent Mardi Gras celebrations were guilty of public drunkenness, police say.
The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune said the arrests all took place between 12:01 a.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday and in certain occasions suspects' public drunkenness was paired with charges of disturbing the peace or resisting arrest.
The weekend arrests at the annual New Orleans celebration also included two arrests for prostitution, one for spitting on the sidewalk and another for failing to pay for a drink at an area business.
Several drivers also were arrested for not having proper driver's licenses or registration papers. Two additional drivers were booked for parking their vehicles in handicapped parking spots without proper authorization.
The Times-Picayune said searches of the suspects uncovered drugs ranging from marijuana and prescription medication to heroin and cocaine.
