WB to release Mel Gibson movie

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Warner Bros. has acquired the North American rights to the Mel Gibson movie "Edge of Darkness," a big-screen adaptation of the British miniseries.

Variety.com said the studio acquired the rights from the production company GK Films.

Co-starring Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic and Shawn Roberts along with Gibson, the movie is about a veteran Boston homicide detective whose only child is killed on his front doorstep.

The film, which is in post-production, was co-written by "The Departed" scribe William Monahan and "Lantana" author Andrew Bovell.

"Edge" marks Gibson's first on-screen feature film appearance since he was arrested in 2006 for drunken driving and made anti-Semitic remarks to a Jewish police officer, a move that drew widespread criticism. Gibson publicly apologized for the incident but has been keeping a somewhat low profile since.
