LOS ANGELES, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Horror was more popular than romance this Valentine's Day weekend with the "Friday the 13th" opening at No. 1 in U.S. theaters, Box Office Mojo said Sunday.
The 2009 edition of the horror movie series, directed by Marcus Nispel, raked in an estimated $42.25 million in its first weekend to take the top spot from the romantic comedy "He's Just Not That Into You," which was No. 2 with $19.61 million in gate receipts. "Taken" moved down a spot to No. 3 at $19.25 million.
Another romantic comedy, "Confessions of a Shopaholic," starring Australian soap opera star Isla Fisher ("Wedding Crashers"), broke out at No. 4 with $15.41 million in estimated receipts and "Coraline" slipped to No. 5 with $15.32 million.
Yet another new offering, "The International," a drama starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts, was No. 7 at $10 million.
Completing the Top 10 were "The Pink Panther 2" at $9 million, "Slumdog Millionaire" at $7.15 million and "Push" at $6.93 million.
Gone from the top tier this week are "Gran Torino," "The Uninvited" and "Hotel for Dogs."
