Gabriel cancels Oscar night performance

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- British singer Peter Gabriel says he will not perform his best soundtrack song nominated "Down to Earth" at this year's Academy Awards as planned.

The former Genesis vocalist said in an online posting that he decided not to perform his song from the movie "Wall-E" during the Feb. 22 awards show after learning his work would only enjoy, at most, 65 seconds of air time, The Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

Gabriel said he learned from Oscar organizers that "Earth" would be part of a medley that would include the other two nominated best soundtrack songs.

The singer, who will still attend the awards event, said on PeterGabriel.com he decided not to perform his song since he felt the short time frame was not long enough to properly showcase it.

The Reporter said the other two nominated songs are from "Slumdog Millionaire." They are A.R. Rahman and M.I.A.'s "O Saya" and Rahman's "Jai Ho."
