NEW YORK, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Actor and former U.S. presidential candidate Fred D. Thompson is set to make his return to television in an episode of "Life on Mars," ABC announced.

Thompson, 66, is to portray Police Chief Harry Woolf in the Feb. 25 installment of the1970s-set cop drama, which stars Jason O'Mara, Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli, Gretchen Mol and Jonathan Murphy.

Thompson, who served as a Republican senator representing Tennessee from 1994 through 2003, was a cast member of "Law & Order" for five years and made appearances on the show's spinoffs "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

Thompson's bid for the Republican nomination for U.S. president was unsuccessful last year as Sen. John McCain became the party's candidate in the election.
