NEW YORK, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- U.S. first lady Michelle Obama will appear on the cover of Vogue Magazine in March, becoming the second president's wife to do so, a Vogue spokesman said.

Photographer Annie Leibovitz photographed Obama wearing a magenta dress designed by Jason Wu, People Magazine reported. Wu also designed Obama's inauguration gown.

While nearly every first lady -- beginning in 1929 with Herbert Hoover's wife, Lou -- has been photographed for the influential fashion magazine, only Hillary Clinton was featured on the cover, Vogue spokesman Patrick O'Connell said.

"Change was the clarion call of Barack Obama's election campaign, though I don't think any of us at Vogue initially realized that would include the difference that was going to be made by first lady Michelle Obama's wardrobe," Vogue Editor Anna Wintour said.

"It's inspiring to see our first lady so serene and secure in her personal style," Wintour said.
