'Slumdog' wins big at BAFTAs

LONDON, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- "Slumdog Millionaire" was named best film of 2008 and took seven prizes overall at the Orange British Academy Film Awards in London Sunday night.

The story about an uneducated young man's extraordinary winning streak on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" beat out "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "Milk" and "The Reader" for the best picture honor.

"Slumdog Millionaire" also won BAFTAs for director Danny Boyle and for Simon Beaufoy's adapted screenplay, as well as for cinematography, music, editing and sound.

Mickey Rourke won the best leading actor prize for his work in "The Wrestler."

Kate Winslet took home the award for best leading actress for her performance in "The Reader."

The late Heath Ledger won the BAFTA for supporting actor for his memorable turn in "The Dark Knight" and Penelope Cruz earned the award for supporting actress for her performance in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

British TV and radio star Jonathan Ross served as host of the BAFTA Awards ceremony.
