Val Kilmer mulls run for N.M. governor

SANTA FE, N.M., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Val Kilmer could join the ranks of Hollywood stars to go from the big screen to politics -- he says he's thinking of running for governor of New Mexico.

The Christian Science Monitor reported Friday that Kilmer -- who starred in "Top Gun," "Batman Forever" and "The Doors" -- is considering a gubernatorial bid.

Kilmer, a registered Democrat, has lived in New Mexico for 20 years, the newspaper reported.

"There are a lot of actors who become politicians," he told The Boston Globe last month -- mentioning Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood and Arnold Schwarzenegger. "And they always win, so I guess we'll see."

Reagan was elected governor of California and president of the United States. Eastwood was elected mayor of Carmel, Calif., and Schwarzenegger is currently serving his second term as governor of California.

Kilmer is considering running for governor of New Mexico in 2010, to succeed Gov. Bill Richardson.
