LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Former TV star Ed McMahon says he will appear in a commercial during the Super Bowl for a U.S. service that once proved invaluable to him.
The 85-year-old former "Tonight Show" announcer said the commercial for Cash4Gold that will appear during Sunday's game was a reminder of harder times, People.com reported Friday.
McMahon said he used Cash4Gold, which pays for jewelry and other quality metal goods, during his recent bout with financial troubles.
"I had a lot of old wedding bands," he said in regards to some of the items he sold. "Let's say they had 'mixed' memories associated with them."
McMahon, who hosted "Star Search" from 1983 to 1995, told People.com that he is still a comedian despite his past woes, which included a neck injury.
"Anyone can be funny and charming in good times. The real test of a man's character is how you deal with adversity," he said.
