LOS ANGELES, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Joaquin Phoenix's publicist insists the Hollywood actor is sincere in his bid for a career as a rap artist.

EW.com this week quoted two sources as saying the "Gladiator" and "Walk the Line" star's recent foray into hip-hop music is an elaborate hoax and something Phoenix views as an "art project."

However, his representative issued a statement to MTV News contradicting the report.

"The transition from one career to another is never seamless. It should come as no surprise to anyone that Joaquin came from a musical family, in addition to winning a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Johnny Cash," Susan Patricola wrote in an e-mail Wednesday. "He intends on exploring his musical interests despite speculative, negative or positive reactions."
