Anchor Bay grabs Kutcher film 'Spread'

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Anchor Bay Films has snatched up the U.S. and Australian rights to "Spread," a new movie starring actor Ashton Kutcher, industry sources say.

The Hollywood Reporter said Friday that Anchor Bay is thought to have paid an estimated $3.5 million for the rights to the Kutcher vehicle, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last weekend.

The movie, featuring Kutcher as a male gigolo attempting to become monogamous, had been drawing a lot of interest from distributors prior to Anchor Bay's pick-up, the Reporter said.

Kutcher's previous film efforts include "What Happens in Vegas" and "The Guardian."

"Spread" will be part of Anchor Bay's home video platform.

The Reporter said Anchor Bay had also been contemplating buying up "The Killing Room" during the Sundance Festival, but took no reported action on the thriller.
