NEW YORK, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Taiwan-born, New York designer Jason Wu says he was eating pizza and watching inauguration coverage on TV when he first saw Michelle Obama was wearing his gown.

The new first lady has been earning raves for her choice to don the stunning, white, one-shouldered frock for Tuesday night's 10 inaugural balls honoring her husband, President Barack Obama.

"I found out when the whole world found out," Wu told Us Weekly in a telephone interview Wednesday. "I said: 'It looks white. It looks like mine ...' I had a box of pizza and it nearly fell over. I was sitting there with my friends, and they were screaming."

Wu said he never met Michelle Obama but heard she "wanted something that sparkled" for the special occasion.

"I just went for it," Wu told the magazine, adding he hand-delivered the 20-yard dress to her assistants and "hoped for the best."

"She's so statuesque. I knew white would look great on her. White is a powerful color. I wanted to show off her arms, but not too much," he noted.

The designer went on to say he was giving himself a day to enjoy the excitement.

"Then I have to get back to work. I have a fall collection to do in two weeks. I have to stay grounded," he added.
