Glitter drops sex registry appeal

LONDON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Singer and convicted pedophile Gary Glitter has dropped his campaign to have his name taken off England's sex offender registry, court officials said.

A spokesman for Harrow Crown Court told the Sun newspaper the former glam rock star has withdrawn his request for an appeal on the basis that he and his lawyer don't think he can get a fair trial due to the publicity surrounding his case.

As a registered sex offender, Glitter must notify police if he moves to a new home or stays somewhere else for seven days, or if he plans to leave the country for three or more days.

Glitter was sentenced by a Vietnamese court to three years in prison in March 2006 for sexually abusing two girls, ages 10 and 11. He was released early in August and deported by Vietnam.

Glitter previously served two months in jail in 1999 for possessing child pornography in England.
