'Slumdog' nominated for 11 BAFTAs

LONDON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- "Slumdog Millionaire" earned 11 Orange British Academy Film Awards nominations, including one for best picture, it was announced Thursday in London.

The uplifting story about a poor, uneducated man's journey to become the unlikely winner of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" in India also was nominated for the BAFTAs for outstanding British film, director, adapted screenplay, cinematography, sound, editing, production design and music, while its stars Dev Patel and Freida Pinto earned nods in the lead actor and supporting actress categories, respectively.

Also shortlisted for the best film prize are "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "Milk" and "The Reader."

Nominated along with "Slumdog" for outstanding British film are "Hunger," "In Bruges," "Man on Wire" and "Mamma Mia!"

Kate Winslet earned two BAFTA nominations in the lead actress category for her work in "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road." She will compete for the honor against Angelina Jolie for "Changeling," Kristin Scott Thomas for "I've Loved You So Long" and Meryl Streep for "Doubt."

Brad Pitt also picked up two BAFTA nods -- in the lead actor race for his work in "Benjamin Button" and in the supporting actor category for his performance in "Burn After Reading."

In the lead actor category, Pitt is up against Patel, Frank Langella from "Frost/Nixon," Sean Penn from "Milk" and Mickey Rourke from "The Wrestler."

Pitt's fellow nominees on the supporting actor list are Robert Downey Jr. for "Tropic Thunder," Brendan Gleeson for "In Bruges," Philip Seymour Hoffman for "Doubt" and Heath Ledger for "The Dark Knight."

Shortlisted for the supporting actress honor along with Pinto are Amy Adams from "Doubt," Penelope Cruz from "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," Tilda Swinton for "Burn After Reading" and Marisa Tomei for "The Wrestler."
