LOS ANGELES, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. singer John Mayer is in negotiations to star in a network television variety show, CBS announced.

Usmagazine.com quoted CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler telling reporters at a Los Angeles press event that the network is "pretty close to closing our deal" with the 31-year-old recording artist whose hits include "Your Body is Wonderland" and "Waiting on the World to Change."

"It'll be a music variety sketch show," Tassler said. "It's being developed now. ... We're looking at a couple of things. One is it's sort of a pilot. It could be for a series of specials. It could be just for a series. We're just going to shoot the pilot now and see what we have and make a decision after that."

Mayer is currently dating actress Jennifer Aniston.
