Ryan O'Neal and son Redmond arraigned in Malibu, California

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- U.S. actor Ryan O'Neal has been sentenced by a Los Angeles judge to undergo an 18-month drug rehabilitation program.

O'Neal, 67, who pleaded guilty last week to charges of possessing methamphetamines, will have the case dropped if he successfully completes the program, the BBC reported Monday.

He and his son, Redmond, 23, were arrested in September following a police search of their Malibu, Calif., home. Police were there under the probation terms of Redmond's June 2008 arrest for possessing heroin and methamphetamine and driving under the influence.

Ryan O'Neal, who won an Academy Award for the 1970 film "Love Story," will make his next court appearance on July 10, while Redmond is set appear in court next month to face the same charge as well as a count of possessing drug paraphernalia, the British broadcaster said.
