LONDON, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The Royal Shakespeare Company says there is a chance Scottish actor David Tennant may return to its London stage production of "Hamlet."
The "Doctor Who" actor headlined the RSC's production of "Hamlet" in Stratford-upon-Avon during the summer and was slated to continue starring in the drama when it moved to the West End. However, he was forced to drop out of the play before opening night in London to have surgery for a slipped disc in his back.
"We are not ruling out that (Tennant) might be able to return to 'Hamlet' during the last week of the run, although we cannot be more specific about the exact date of his possible return," the RSC said in a statement issued to the BBC.
The company also quoted doctors as saying they were "pleased" with the actor's progress since his surgery.
"Although it is frustrating to have to take it easy whilst all my friends and colleagues continue at the Novello Theatre every night, I am aware that I must listen to the experts and take my time," Tennant added in the statement. "I am impatient to be back at work and sincerely hope to make it back some time before the end of the run. I am very sorry to disappoint anyone who booked to come and see me in 'Hamlet,' but confident that you will be far from disappointed by Edward Bennett's performance in the title role."
The play is scheduled to run until Jan. 10.
