UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- The movie musical "Mamma Mia!" earned $30 million its first day on DVD and Blu-ray release in the United States, Universal Studios Home Entertainment said.

The company said it sold more than 2.25 million copies of the blockbuster Tuesday, the first day it was available in the United States.

"Adding spectacular star power to the record-breaking popularity of the global stage hit and the unforgettable music of ABBA has made 'Mamma Mia! The Movie' the must-see film event of the year," Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platform, said in a statement.

"That unbeatable combination has created extraordinary demand for the new DVD and Blu-ray releases, as demonstrated by its phenomenal success in the U.S. and all over the world."

The movie stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and Stellan Skarsgard. About 3.2 million copies of it were sold its first week on DVD in the United Kingdom, making it the fastest-selling DVD ever in Britain, Universal said. It was released on DVD there last month.
