NEW YORK, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Hollywood film star Tom Cruise admitted on NBC's "Today" that he came across as arrogant during his last interview with the morning program three years ago.

Cruise and interviewer Matt Lauer made headlines when they verbally sparred about the merits of psychiatry on the air; however, both have maintained there were no hard feelings after the confrontation.

The actor returned to the show Monday to promote his new World War II movie "Valkyrie" and told Lauer about their last on-air meeting: "After looking at it, I really thought it's not what I had intended. ... In looking at myself, I thought, 'Man, that came across as arrogant. ...' That's one of those things that you go, 'I could have absolutely handled that better. ...' I didn't communicate it the way that I wanted to communicate it. That's not who I am. That's not the person that I am, coming across in that way. ... I learned a good lesson."

Cruise also said he will continue to speak his mind, but now knows "there's a time and a place for it."

"Things can get misunderstood and twisted," he said. "When people are tuning in to hear about my movie ... that's what I'm here to talk about it."
