A&E, ReelzChannel cut staff

NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A&E Television Networks and ReelzChannel have both laid off employees because of the struggling U.S. economy, an official says.

ReelzChannel President Gary Thorne said his company has cut more than 40 employees from its Los Angeles offices and the cable TV channel will revamp its movie news show "Dailies," The Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

Thorne said "Dailies" will soon be cut from half-hour and hour-long episodes to three-minute segments that should be more appealing to the cinema fan.

"This was more consumer-driven than anything else," Thorne said. "News is attainable everywhere by the consumer, and we wanted to make it more current and more topical."

Meanwhile, A&E Television Networks cut 20 total staffers, ranging from freelancers to full-time digital media division employees.

The network group has nearly 650 total employees working to operate the A&E Network, History and Biography Channel, the Reporter said.
