NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Kate Winslet, the British star of "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road," says she relishes playing complicated characters in stories that aren't easy to define.

"Yes, I am, very much so (attracted to those kinds of characters and films.) I don't even know why sometimes," the five-time Oscar nominee told UPI in New York recently.

"I suppose because I like surprising myself, most importantly, and scaring myself and challenging myself as a person, as an actress," she explained. "And I like doing things that are completely unpredictable. I like the idea of -- not shocking people -- but just throwing people off. Doing something that makes them go: 'Whoa, she did that next? Wow! I didn't think she was going to do that!' That makes me feel like I'm able to do something interesting."

Winslet's film credits include "Little Children," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Iris," "Titanic" and "Sense and Sensibility."
