'Dexter,' 'Lost' up for WGA awards

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- The Writers Guild of America Monday nominated "Dexter," "Friday Night Lights," "Lost," "Mad Men" and "The Wire" for its dramatic TV series award.

The WGA prizes honoring excellence in TV, radio, news and promotional writing are to be handed out in Los Angeles and New York Feb. 7.

Shortlisted for the WGA award for a TV comedy series are "30 Rock," "Entourage," "The Office," "The Simpsons" and "Weeds."

Nominated for a writing prize in the new TV series category are "Breaking Bad," "Fringe," "In Treatment," "Life on Mars" and "True Blood."

In the running for the award for comedy/variety series, including talks shows, are "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "Late Show with David Letterman," "Real Time with Bill Maher," "Saturday Night Live," "The Colbert Report" and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."

Nominated in the comedy/variety -- music, awards, tributes, specials -- category are the "2008 Film Independent Spirit Awards" and "Jimmy Kimmel's Big Night of Stars."

Earning nods for the award for daytime serial are "As the World Turns" and "One Life to Live."

Shortlisted in the documentary current events category are "Bush's War: Part One," "Depression: Out of the Shadows," "Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial," "Rules of Engagement" and "The Medicated Child." All of the nominees in this category aired on PBS.
