Coldplay, Adele earn top Grammy nods

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Coldplay earned nods for record of the year, album of the year and song of the year when Grammy award nominations were announced in Los Angeles Wednesday night.

The British rock group also was shortlisted for the prizes for best pop performance and best rock performance by a duo or group with vocals, as well as best rock album and best rock song, it was announced during a star-studded concert at the Nokia Theatre.

Competing against Coldplay's song "Viva La Vida" in the record of the year category are Adele's "Chasing Pavements," Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love," M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" and Robert Plant and Alison Krauss's "Please Read the Letter."

Nominated alongside Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" for album of the Year are Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III," Ne-Yo's "Year of the Gentleman," Plant and Krauss's "Raising Sand" and Radiohead's "In Rainbows."

"Viva" was also nominated for song of the year, as were "American Boy" by Estelle, featuring Kanye West, "Chasing Pavements" by Adele, "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz and "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles.

Adele also was nominated for the best new artist Grammy, along with Duffy, Jonas Brothers, Lady Antebellum and Jazmine Sullivan.

In total, Lil Wayne was nominated for eight awards, Coldplay for seven trophies, and West, Ne-Yo and Jay-Z for six prizes.

The 51st annual Grammy Awards will be handed out Feb. 8.
