LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Steve Buscemi is in talks to headline "Boardwalk Empire," an HBO drama pilot set in 1920s Atlantic City and to be directed by Martin Scorsese.

The Hollywood Reporter said Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald is in negotiations for a co-starring role in the pilot, which was written by "The Sopranos" scribe Terence Winter and based on Nelson Johnson's book by the same name.

Buscemi had a recurring role on "The Sopranos" before his character Tony Blundetto was whacked. He also directed several episodes of the celebrated mob drama. His big-screen credits include "Reservoir Dogs," "Ghost World," "Fargo," "Interview" and "Con Air."

Macdonald won an Emmy Award for her work in the HBO movie "The Girl at the Cafe." She has also starred in the films "Intermission," "Gosford Park," "Nanny McPhee" and "No Country for Old Men."
