NEW YORK, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- New Arts NYC says it is planning a free public concert at New York's Central Park Bandshell to commemorate the life of British music giant John Lennon.
Lennon, a former member of the rock 'n' roll band the Beatles, was shot and killed in Manhattan Dec. 8, 1980. Since his death, fans have gathered annually in Central Park to celebrate his words, music and ideas.
This year, the informal annual gatherings in the park have been formally organized by a group of community volunteers and musicians known as New Arts NYC.
The free two-hour concert called "For the Love of Lennon" is to be presented in association with the New York City Parks and Recreation Department on the afternoon of Dec. 7, the group said in a news release.
The event is to be led by an on-stage group of professional musicians. Visitors will be encouraged to sing along to their favorite Lennon songs and pay homage to the beloved recording artist.
"It's about doing something out of love for this city, and in honor of a profound artist and New Yorker who continues to touch the hearts, minds and ears of millions. It's going to be a lot of fun. I can't wait," New Arts NYC founder Michael Dustin Youree said in a statement.
