Author Nasreen forced to leave India

NEW DELHI, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Bangladeshi feminist author Taslima Nasreen says the Indian government has forced her to leave the country after granting her temporary residence.

Nasreen has been threatened by Muslim fundamentalists offended by her book "Lajja." She was exiled from India months ago due to protests but she re-entered the country in August, only to be ordered to leave again last month.

"Yes, I was forced to leave India once again ... The government gave me resident permit for six months with a secret condition that I must leave the country in a few days," Nasreen told Press Trust of India in an e-mail interview. "As the door of Bangladesh is closed for me, my home, I still consider, is in India, in the West Bengal city of Kolkata. If I am not allowed to return there, then it is back to nomadic existence again, without a land, without a home. ... India, which prides itself of being the world's largest democracy, an allegedly secular state, could not give shelter to me."

Nasreen had been living in India since 1994 after she was banished from Bangladesh because of her controversial book. She told PTI she is based in Europe now and travels to give lectures.
