LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Actress Nicole Kidman has agreed to play the world's first post-operation transsexual in the Hollywood movie "The Danish Girl," industry officials say.

While industry officials would not divulge details regarding a start date for the production, The Hollywood Reporter said Saturday Kidman has agreed to portray Danish artist Einar Wegener.

The story will follow Wegener's life after his artist wife Greta convinces him to become a woman with a ground-breaking surgery in 1931.

The film will be based on a 2000 novel by David Ebershoff that told a fictionalized tale regarding the real-life artistic couple.

The book will be adapted to the big screen by writer Lucinda Coxon and will be directed by "Shopgirl" director Anand Tucker.

The Reporter said actress Charlize Theron is expected to play the part of Greta Wegener.
