NEW YORK, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- "Saturday Night Live" executive producer Lorne Michaels says he is eagerly awaiting the U.S. presidential election because it will grant him some rest.
With his NBC comedy series routinely spoofing both Republican and Democratic U.S. presidential and vice presidential candidates, Michaels said having the race for the White House settled Nov. 4 will be a nice reprieve from work, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.
"I'm looking forward to that week," Michaels said of election week, which will also mark the final season airing of Michaels' other TV project, "Weekend Update Thursdays."
"SNL" has been enjoying a sudden upsurge in popularity thanks, in part, to Tina Fey's comedic imitations of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.
But Michaels told the Daily News there has always been an audience for his long-running TV series, just as there always have been up-and-down audience numbers.
"This is the 34th season so I've lived through the 'It's funny again,' 'It's not funny anymore' comments," Michaels said. "Fortunately, there's always been an audience and a very loyal one at that."
