Cruise offers roast jokes on Lauer

NEW YORK, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Actor Tom Cruise used a Friars Club roast appearance in New York to poke fun at a noted adversary, "The Today Show" host Matt Lauer.

Cruise, who once called Lauer "glib" during a televised interview, made reference to that highly publicized TV clash during a roast of the noted TV personality Friday, People magazine reported.

The "Valkyrie" star joked that the man he once butted heads with in the 2005 interview while discussing prescription medications and Scientology, had offered him advice on love.

Cruise claimed that before his famed appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," it was Lauer who told him to publicly announce his love for his future wife, actress Katie Holmes.

"He said, 'Tom, Tom, don't be glib, You're in love.'" Cruise joked at Friday's event. "Be inspiring … People will love you for it."

The Friars Club routinely chooses celebrities to roast, meaning the stars must endure a litany of jokes and insults as part of being honored by the club.
