LONDON, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Lucian Freud's 1967 portrait of his friend and fellow British painter Francis Bacon has sold for $9.3 million at a Christie's auction in London.

The Daily Telegraph said the price paid was considerably lower than the $12 million the painting was expected to fetch.

The work is one of only two oil portraits Freud painted of Bacon, who died in 1992. It has been owned by a private collector since 1972, the Telegraph noted.

The newspaper did not say who the new owner is.
