'Max' maxes out debut at No. 1

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- The crime drama "Max Payne" shot to the top in its first weekend in U.S. theaters, Box Office Mojo said Sunday.

The Fox movie, starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis and directed by John Moore, tallied an estimated $18 million in ticket sales. That pushed "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" down to No. 2 at $11.2 million.

Two more new movies, "The Secret Life of Bees" and "W.," arrived at Nos. 3 and 4. "Bees," starring Dakota Fanning and Queen Latifah in the story about a girl haunted buy the memory of her mother, sold about $11.05 million in tickets, while "W.," Oliver Stone's take on the current U.S. president, pulled in $10.55 million.

Next in line were "Eagle Eye," $7.34 million; "Body of Lies," $6.88 million; "Quarantine," $6.3 million; and "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," $3.9 million.

Debuting at No. 9 was "Sex Drive," a comedy about a high school student on a road trip with his buddies to meet a girl he met online, starring Josh Zuckerman and Amanda Crew, made $3.57 million.

No. 10 was "Nights in Rodanthe" at $2.68 million.

Falling out of the top tier were "Fireproof," "The Express," "The Duchess" and "Appaloosa."
