The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday that the dramatic account about a member of the Irish Republican Army acting as an informant for British authorities was honored at last week's festival.

The movie, based on a novel by British spy Martin McGartland, premiered last month at the Toronto Film Festival.

In addition to recognizing "Dead Men" during Friday's ceremony in the British Columbia city, Vancouver festival officials gave out nine other cinematic awards.

The CBC said among those receiving awards were French director Philippe Claudel's "I've Loved You So Long," which won the festival's audience prize, and most popular Canadian movie winner "Mothers & Daughters."

The National Film Board also gave artist Velcrow Ripper's "Fierce Light: When Spirit Meets Action" the most popular Canadian documentary award, the CBC said.
