Court: Glitter banned from France, Spain

LONDON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Former British pop star and convicted child molester Gary Glitter has been banned from traveling to France and Spain, court officials said.

Glitter, 64, recently returned to England following his release from a Vietnamese prison where he served a three-year sentence for committing obscene acts with two girls, ages 10 and 11. The 1970s glam rocker -- whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd -- was also convicted in the United Kingdom in 1999 of possessing child pornography in a separate incident.

Because of his criminal record, the entertainer is required to notify officials of his travel plans.

The Daily Mail said the Ashford Magistrates' Court granted the Kent Police an order preventing Glitter from traveling to France and Spain after the singer told them he planned to go there.

Police sought the order on the grounds Glitter could be a danger to children in those countries.

Glitter, who did not attend the hearing, has the right to appeal the ruling, the Mail noted.
