LOS ANGELES, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- The death of Hollywood screen icon Paul Newman is a tragic loss to the entertainment industry and the world, friends of the film star say.
"There is a point where feelings go beyond words," Newman's friend and co-star Robert Redford said in a statement. "I have lost a real friend. My life -- and this country -- is better for his being in it."
Actress Victoria Principal, who teamed with Newman in "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean," echoed Redford's sentiments.
"His generosity was real and inspirational to everyone who knew him and the world was a better place while he was here," she told People magazine.
U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and former President Bill Clinton also praised Newman, who died Friday at the age of 83 of complications arising from cancer.
"Paul was an American icon, philanthropist and champion for children," the political couple said in a statement. "We will miss our dear friend, whose continued support always meant the world to us."
