WESTPORT, Conn., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Town officials in Westport, Conn., say U.S. actor Paul Newman has died at his home at the age of 83.

Newman died Friday night after a long illness. Published reports said was cancer, Westport Now said Saturday.

Newman, who had lived in Westport for more than 50 years, was an actor, director, entrepreneur and race car driver who won an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award, and an Emmy award.

Newman founded Newman's Own, a Westport-based food company which has donated more than $200 million to charity.

Newman, in August, declined further out-patient treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and had told his family he wished to die at home, Westport Now reported, noting Connecticut's Lime Rock race track reportedly opened for an afternoon in August so Newman could take a few last laps in his GT1 Corvette.

Newman, who was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb, was divorced from actress Jacqueline Witte in 1957 and married actress Joanne Woodward in 1958.

He is survived by Woodward, two daughters from his first marriage and three daughters from his second marriage.
