NEW YORK, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- About 5.2 million people saw the U.S. television bio-picture "Coco Chanel" when it debuted during the weekend, Lifetime said Monday.

The Lifetime Original Movie, starring Oscar-winning actress Shirley MacLaine as the titular French fashion icon, premiered Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. ET.

The network said the movie was basic cable's second highest rated original film of the year to date, behind only Lifetime's 2008 Emmy Award nominee "The Memory Keeper's Daughter," which scored 5.8 million viewers when it debuted.

The "Coco Chanel" encore at 11 p.m. ET delivered 2.2 million total viewers, Lifetime said.

The movie also starred Malcolm McDowell as Marc Bouchier, "Chanel's confidante and business associate," while Barbora Bobulova portrayed "the pioneering couturier in her early days of love and loss," the network noted.
